DESCRIPTION: |
This
formal, well-proportioned residence also shows characteristics
of the Georgian Mode. Of particular interest are the projecting
center pavilion composed of Doric columns in antis, second
story triple windows with arched glazing patterns showing
a Palladian influence and an attic porch with access by
way of an over-sized central dormer. The corners of the
main mass and second floor pavilion are emphasized by
quoins. The house takes advantage of its corner lot by
having its driveway leading from the side street to a
rear porte cochere. |
OF
INTEREST: |
According
to city building permits, this nine-room residence was
built for $9,900 (an exception to Munger's rule that Swiss
Avenue houses must cost a minimum of $10,000). Joe Wilks
is considered the first owner, but M.H. Wolfe, a cotton
merchant, was probably the first resident. |
