YEAR BUILT: 1918
ARCHITECT/BUILDER: Bertram Hill
ORIGINAL OWNER: I.G. Thompson
ORIGINAL
DESCRIPTION:
This formal residence has the basic form and fenestration of the Progessive Mode. Yet it is adorned with details borrowed widely from more eclectic styles such as the tile roof and, as can be seen in the following photograph, the Georgian Style porch and modillions. This confusing mix of styles presents a strong case for the adaptability of the Progressive Mode. A combination of modillions and vertical decorations comprise the large bracket forms which support the wide overhanging eaves of the tile roof. According to architect Bertram Hill, the central plaque above the door is cast stone relief work combining a shield with ribbon and foliage and was made by an English stonesman. The main door is framed by paired fluted columns and pilasters with unusual capitals of acanthus leaves supporting a classical entablature.
